Introduction

This section deals religious education’s contribution to the wider development of pupils and students, including their spiritual and moral development but also social and emotional aspects of learning.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development (SMSC) underpin the whole curriculum and are sometimes subsumed under the generic term personal development. This guide will deal with each in turn and address the contribution RE can make to these areas. However, they need to be seen as inter-related aspects within a holistic understanding of children’s and young people’s overall development.
